What Holly’s Husband Did by Debbie Viggiano

My review

I have lost it, I have lost it, I’ve seriously lost it. It is sad, it is disheartening, it is really very bad. I have nothing left to do but to announce it — it’s gone! My sense of humour has deserted me. I have lost my funny bone!! Sighhhh…

How do I know that?? The book which has laugh out loud romantic comedy as the tag line did not make me laugh, not a single smile, nary a stretching of lips. Sighhhh…

Holly finds texts on husband’s phone from a Queenie with some naughty x-rated stuff and her doubts and suspicions start bubbling. The book follows the usual twists and turns, especially when the husband refuses to give her a warm hug. A cardboard hug is what he gives. (What’s that you ask? When Sheldon hugs and says there, there vis-a-vis The Big Bang Theory and Sheldon’s appeared warmer.) Sighhhh…

My second book by author Debbie Viggiano, and I had great expectations from it. I wanted to roll with laughter, but it was a pleasant read. I kept hoping that the book would pick up speed or interest, but it remained just a pleasant read. Last 20% of the book was good fun with secrets revealed, though I had already guessed with the cardboard hug. It ended as a pleasant read. Sighhhh…..

What I really didn’t like were the dialogs of the husband and Holly’s after-thoughts, especially

The doctor husband says about another woman to his wife, Holly

“She will be talking knowledgeably tomorrow, mingling with those who have suffered Trigeminal Neuralgia. But what exactly are you able to offer, Holly? An opinion of shade of nail polish you’re wearing or the best shop to buy an evening gown”

That’s what he thinks his wife does and his opinion about her level of intelligence, after years of marriage and with a 14-year-old daughter. But this is not the worst part, the wife in return goes into such realms of insecurity in the entire book that even with the texts and incomplete explanations, she believes she needs therapy and antidepressants, not the husband. He is just perfect. That put me off majorly. Sighhhh….

It might be me, but I think women can stand up for themselves and think logically, especially when the husbands are caught with sexts on cell which are supposed to be rantings of a patient. (There is something known as block and delete, if the patient texts constantly.) Sighhhh…

What Holly’s husband did is revealed in the end, and what the book revealed is my runaway humor. Sighhhh…

I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Bookouture, and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

My rating : 3 stars

Book blurb

Holly Hart has been married for fifteen blissful years to hubby Alex. Well… if you don’t count last Christmas, when she accidentally found a load of flirty texts on Alex’s phone. But every marriage has its ups and downs and Alex had a perfectly reasonable explanation… so why can’t Holly forget what she saw? So what if her husband isn’t exactly Brad Pitt? He’s hers, and if someone else is trying to steal him she wants to know who…

But the truth is way more shocking than Holly ever anticipated. Can Holly, let alone her marriage, ever recover from what she discovers?

  2. I loved your review of this one Shalini. 😂😂I’m so disappointed when I don’t get the humor. I went to a movie a few weeks back and didn’t get any of the supposed humorous lines. I kept whispering to my husband, “I don’t get it!” 🤷🏽‍♀️
And I’m not sure if I’d connect with the wife’s behavior in this one.
Thanks for the comical review. I loved those beginning lines. 😂😂

    1. Hahaha I was so exasperated, I kept searching for the humor. I went to the other reviews, they were rolling on the floor with laughter. I sat on the floor hoping I would roll. But alas I didn’t…
The tag lines are quite spurious nowadays.
Luckily people who read the review thought I had humor. I was quite sure I have lost it 😉😉😂😂
