The book had strange powers. I saw the shadowy tendrils arise from it in an insidious manner, swirl slowly, taking a careful whiffs around, and then ensaring me, pulling me towards it till I was addicted to reading the book. Such was the power of Heidi Perks’ Now You See Her
The story revolved around a child Alice, her mother Harriet, and the neighbor/friend Charlotte. The three formed the main crux of the story. Harriet had to attend a day course on the day of the fête, so Charlotte was minding Alice for the day. Waiting for the kids to finish their rides, she took her eyes off them and glanced into her phone (as most of us do), and Alice disappeared from the fête.. POOF. No clues, no reasons… Just a strange disappearance. The mystery starts, and the pages start rolling.
I liked the way the author Heidi Perks had written the plot, it involved strange dynamics between Harriet and Charlotte. Are they friends? Aren’t they? They met up, they spoke, but did they really know each other? Harriet’s husband Brian too behaved oddly towards Charlotte. Did losing a child make him go off balance? Or was it something more?
Heidi Parks with her sublime mysterious writing, did not allow me to breathe. I kept leaving my other work to return to this novel. The suspense of wanting to know what happened to the child was too high...
Once the cops made their appearance, there was a distinct tremble of secrets in the air which ripped the characters to act and react. Human nature was described in turns where friends show sympathy initially then doubts followed by avoidance. Both the families were ripped apart. Charlotte’s guilt at losing the child was palpable throughout the book.
But it was Harriet that my eyes were drawn to, she intrigued me, an over protective mother who had never been away from her child for even thirteen hours was away from her for thirteen days. Her husband Brian too showed his caring in various ways, some of them were a bit too close to be comfort. There was something very disturbing in the aura between them all. And that trapped me into the book….
Now You See Her caused nobody to see me for the day, till I finished the book, and the tendrils released me, with a shock, literally making me fall on my ass, wondering —Wow what did I read just now!!
I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Random House UK, Cornerstone, and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
