Book Review – The Escape Room by Megan Goldin

This was seriously good reading. I first saw the review on Ludwig’s blog, and the entire concept fascinated me from the get go. Then Brittany came up with a brilliant plan to buddy read with me… Well that was the perfect push for me to read the book ASAP. I enjoyed my discussions with her and the way we encouraged and joined our reading energies with each other.

Brittany’s Review and Rating

4.75 stars

I’m so glad that we decided to read this book because it was quite a ride! The author managed to write a seriously intriguing story that will keep you in your toes. You’ll always be one step behind and the ending will likely shock you (at least it did me). I don’t think I’ve read anything before that has a storyline quite like this, so now I feel the need to indulge in more similar thrillers! Definitely a worthwhile read that I recommend.”

Check out her review here. She is absolutely fabulous, a real book guru

Imagine… Close your eyes and just imagine… 4 people called for a meeting in a partially constructed, isolated building, get into the elevator, and it stops. The notification screen blinks on and the first clue is revealed…. This is the escape room, solve the clues, and get out, else….

The entire situation of heightened emotions, of fear, hunger, thirst, anger, envy, lust in the tiny cramped elevator raised my interest and brought on a flurry of goosebumps that I knew I would be obsessed about this book. Megan Goldin’s writing had me addicted to the book.

The chapters had alternate points of view: what happens in the elevator and a past history of a Sara Hill, all of which get intertwined later. The story moves like a Burmese python stalking its prey where you know that life is about to be squeezed…. (I am amazed and shocked at my gruesome comparison)

Megan has depicted the true life of the Wall Street bankers and financiers coated in their greed for lucrative deals and high end bonuses, where profit is the end result, at any cost. These 4 high fliers suddenly find themselves in a closed room with minimal ventilation and no escape route, where the claustrophobia and paranoia strip them off their glossy veneer and their true nature comes out…

Green is their color, money and jealousy paints them in that hue. I love the way Megan has shown how the need for promotion and bonus brings out the evil in men/women leading sometimes to death… Ahhh beautiful!!

There were a few unanswered questions which niggled me, but the ending gave me so much peace. My vengeant heart which demanded blood and justice midway down the book was finally quiet when the last chapter was revealed….

I loved the book in toto, and this is my journey into its pages, straight from the heart.

MEGAN GOLDIN reported from the Middle East for the Associated Press, Reuters, and the ABC. During nearly two decades as a journalist, she wrote about war, peace, and international terrorism. After travelling and living all over the world, she resides in Australia with her husband and three sons.

Vincent, Jules, Sylvie, and Sam are ruthlessly ambitious high-flyers working in the lucrative world of Wall Street finance where deception and intimidation thrive. Getting rich is all that matters, and they’ll do anything to reach the top.

When they are ordered to participate in a corporate team-building exercise that requires them to escape from a locked elevator, dark secrets of their team begin to be laid bare.

The biggest mystery to solve in this lethal game: What happened to Sara Hall? Once a young shining star―now “gone but not forgotten”.

This is no longer a game.
They’re fighting for their lives.

  1. Your enjoyment of the story shows, Shalini. I’m claustrophobic too, so i can’t imagine how rabid i’d turn if i were to be stuck inside an elevator. Well, that’s one of the reasons i often take the stairs – and drive whoever is with me mad.

  2. I’ve never buddy-read/reviewed before. What happens if one of you loves the book and the other hates it? LOL. 🙂 Great review, Shalini. This sounds like an awesome read. I will have to check it out. Happy Tuesday (er, almost Wednesday for you!)

    • Hahaha then we would give clear explanation why one didn’t like and the other did. 😉😉😘😘It is still Tuesday… Expect my mail in a couple of hours or so

  3. Your enthusiasm is infectious! Power went out when I was in an elevator once and I was stuck in total darkness for about 10 seconds. My poor heart. The premise of this book scares but intrigues me and your review definitely has convinced me that this is a title that I need to read.

    • Diana, this was a great read. It is still available on NG for request. Luckily I had an older edition from penguin I think… Otherwise the book gets released in August 2019…. This needs a faster release. It is simply fab

  4. I am seeing this a day late but… what a great review!! I am so glad we did this buddy read together and even more glad that we both enjoyed the book so much! Your review really built up the suspense for the novel! If I hadn’t already just read it, this review would definitely persuade me to pick the book up. You have a fantastic writing style in your reviews.

I can’t wait for our next buddy read!

      • Hahahah, I love your excitement! I can’t wait to get started either. My other buddy read has been delayed, but I am still down for us to start And Then You Were Gone over the weekend or the beginning of next week! Hopefully this one will be just as good as the last. I am actually nearly out of NG reads!! I just requested some more yesterday and today to get some new ones in my TBR, but I had previously stopped requesting for a bit so I could get some reviews done without worrying too much about my NG percentage! But hopefully I’ll get some new approvals in and we can keep doing more buddy reads!!!
