MY REVIEW

What’s the truth and what’s the figment of imagination? What would you believe what people tell you or what your mind tells you? Whom would you listen to – the voice of husband and neighbors or ELIZA?

Bestselling author, Lucy, found herself in a loop when after an argument, her husband, Dan, disappeared and drops of blood were found on her basement. Did she kill him? The whole thing became complicated because Lucy had a secret in her past of a missing brother from the same neighborhood as the new house her husband bought. Past and present interweaved with advice from ELIZA.

My second book by author Gilly Macmillan, and I kept going in circles, following an unreliable main character. I not only had Lucy to deal with but also Eliza who kept giving contrary statements to protect Lucy. I wasn’t sure whom to believe as both seemed to be telling me the truth, but it also appeared as a lie. ELIZA kept Lucy in check.

I read the book over the afternoon in one sitting because there were so many questions swirling in my brain, each demanding its answer. I needed to know if Lucy had killed her husband and if she’d had a hand in the disappearance of her brother. And ELIZA held all the aces, and she wasn’t telling.

The writing kept the pace going right up till the end, when things started becoming clearer. The ending was left ambiguous as I was burning up with the question that I most wanted the answer for, but unfortunately it was kept open-ended and felt to be slightly fantastical. I like my plotlines to be complete, and it would have given me the greatest pleasure to know the final truth. And ELIZA too fudged the truth.

Nonetheless, this book was highly exciting as truth and lies were the two sides of the same coin, and it kept on flipping in the entire story. ELIZA too kept the coin in the air.

After reading this, I am sure it led to an important question

Who is ELIZA?

Read the book to find out!! 😂

MY RATING

Rating: 4 out of 5.

BOOK BLURB

Bestselling mystery writer Lucy Harper’s talent for invention has given her fame, fortune, and an army of adoring readers. It has also saddled her with dependents, namely her fawning husband Dan.

When Dan suddenly goes missing, his disappearance evokes dark memories that take Lucy back more than thirty years—to the day her brother vanished without a trace. That’s when Lucy began conjuring stories. The police investigation revealed few confirmed details, so she created tales to fill in the gaps, to explain what happened that day her brother disappeared—and young Lucy was the only witness.

Now decades later, with the whole world watching, Lucy’s past and present are colliding, and this bestselling author skilled in telling stories is losing control of her own narrative.

Where is Dan? What happened to Lucy’s brother? And is the brilliant mystery writer—an expert in devising red herrings and hidden clues—revealing all she knows about both disappearances?
