MY REVIEW

After reading Mother Of The Accused, I was eager to read the debut that started it all.

A story about a divorcing couple along with the personal lives of their lawyers that escalated to the point of becoming a reality television series. Oh my!!

The story had potential and the writing, good. But it didn’t have depth to it. Being a debut, one could forgive not having the emotions and nuances in the characterization.

I moved on. Misunderstandings between a husband and wife after nearly 14 years of routine with kids and responsibilities were well shown. Small things escalated to big issues. Lies and avoidance came into it when expectations were let down. All those felt real.

The story went on to lives of all the side characters and diluted my connection with the main ones. So the momentum was lost.

I would have liked it if the author, Leanne Treese, had gone into the different emotions experienced when infidelity was suspected and divorce was spoken of. And both of them were loyal to begin with, just suspected the other and took to divorce.

Then came the reality show offer and the attempt to find their love or move on. Those parts were okay. I wasn’t very convinced by the concept. Maybe if I had been shown a gamut of emotions, I would have been more invested in this different plotline.

After skim-reading this, after 40% I found it to be too underwhelming, I was glad the author had grown so much in her writing with book 2.

MY RATING

Rating: 2 out of 5.
