A complete cat and mouse kind of a story where the cat was always 3 steps ahead and the mice had to play carefully.
Leigh was a lawyer and Callie was a junkie, an addict
But they started out with a shitty mother then went on to experience the most horrendous event of their childhood lives which put them on the opposite directions of a road, far away from each other but always intense in their hearts.
Life moved on…
A call from the boss and Leigh had to meet the client, accused of rape, and defend his case in a week’s time. Who could he be but someone from their past who knew everything.
And from then on…
They had to protect themselves and the client who always had a fail-safe plan. There were other characters who reacted as strong as the sisters and added to the intensity of the story.
This was a threat but in a story
The most realistic Corona imbibed story of our times where masks and sanitizers were incorporated for the first time in a novel, depecting the changed era.
Author Karin Slaughter packed the book with a raw gritty feeling that stayed with you long after the book was done
A storyteller was she
Emotions were at the core, each one gripping me around the throat whether the sisters experienced the threat or when they were helpless. Though they were tough, the facets shown had my heart in the melting state, at times with tears.
Damaged yet pure…
They shone through as they battled an antagonist who nearly stripped them bare, their arms joined when it came to the safety of their child.
Not a suspense
The pawns were all set on the chess board. All that it needed was their movements on the board, their offense and defense were moved synchronized, yet nothing was planned.
Brilliance was seen…
Lots of triggers the book had, the first scene and the sheer violence in it blew my breath away. I stopped breathing. This was a hard core, dark thriller that once you start, you would never be able to stop.
The sisters didn’t… They took it right to the end and finished the tale as the book deserved. Kudos to the author!!

Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She’s an up-and-coming defense attorney at a prestigious law firm in Atlanta, would do anything for her sixteen-year-old daughter Maddy, and is managing to successfully coparent through a pandemic after an amicable separation from her husband Walter.
But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood no one should have to endure … a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and ultimately destroyed by a brutal act of violence.
On a Sunday night at her daughter’s school play, she gets a call from one of the firm’s partners who wants Leigh to come on board to defend a wealthy man accused of multiple counts of rape. Though wary of the case, it becomes apparent she doesn’t have much choice if she wants to keep her job. They’re scheduled to go to trial in one week. When she meets the accused face-to-face, she realizes that it’s no coincidence that he’s specifically asked for her to represent him. She knows him. And he knows her. More to the point, he may know what happened over twenty years ago, and why Leigh has spent two decades avoiding her past.
Suddenly she has a lot more to lose than this case. The only person who can help is her younger, estranged sister Callie—the last person Leigh would ever want to drag into this after all they’ve been through. But with the life-shattering truth in danger of being revealed, she has no choice…

I downloaded the digital version of the book from an online retail, and this is my journey down its pages, straight from the heart. STRICTLY HONEST and UNBIASED.
